How to Translate Your Brand Voice Without Losing Its Soul

29 August 20255 min read

Brand voice is the part of translation that machines – and literal human translators – kill fastest. A tagline that took six months and forty arguments to agree can be reduced, in one faithful translation, to something technically correct and completely lifeless.

The reason is simple: voice isn’t made of words, it’s made of choices. How formal is the register? How cheeky is the humour? Does the brand tease, soothe, boast or whisper? Each of those answers changes depending on the market. British understatement reads as confidence in the UK and as vagueness in Germany. American exuberance reads as energy in the US and as noise in Japan.

So we don’t start with the source text, we start with a voice brief. What does this brand sound like when it’s being lovely to customers? What does it never do? Then native writers rebuild each line inside those guardrails, using the phrasing that audience actually responds to. Sometimes the tagline changes entirely. That’s not a loss, that’s the point.

Finally, we test the translated voice where it lives: on the page, in the ad, next to the product. If a native speaker shrugs, the soul hasn’t survived yet. Keep working until they don’t.
