Investing in Your Team: Why Language Training Is No Longer Optional!

20 October 20262 min read

For years, language training was filed under “nice to have” and parked in the budget somewhere between the Christmas party and the stationery order. That was survivable when most revenue came from one country. It is not survivable now.

The interesting shift is who the training is for. It stopped being a perk for the export sales director. Support engineers handling tickets from Milan, developers reading specs from Berlin, recruiters screening CVs from Madrid, receptionists greeting visiting teams - every one of them meets an international counterpart before lunch. When they fumble, the cost lands somewhere quiet: a slower deal, a gentle “we’ll get back to you”, a candidate who accepts elsewhere.

The investment case writes itself once you price it honestly. A week of a senior person’s time spent miscommunicating with a key account dwarfs a year of weekly lessons. Replacing an employee who felt stuck costs several times their salary. Against either, bespoke language training is one of the cheaper levers on retention, revenue and reach you can pull - and unlike a reorg, nobody dreads it.

The best programmes also send a message that costs nothing: we are investing in you, here, in the language you actually need. People notice that. It shows up in engagement long before it shows up in the pipeline.

If “all positions” sounds ambitious, start with the three roles where an international conversation happens every week. We can have those running inside a month.

– fin. Questions? Just ask.
