The Secret to Navigating Small Talk in International Business

12 September 20254 min read

Every culture makes small talk; almost none of them make it the same way. In the UK and US it warms up the room before business. In the Netherlands it can feel oddly abrupt. In Japan it keeps the surface smooth so nobody loses face. Knowing the local rules turns five wasted minutes into the most useful five minutes of your trip.

Start with topics that travel well: travel, food, sport, the city you’re in, the venue itself. Keep them light and keep them short, one observation, one question, then a graceful exit into business. In many cultures, asking about family too early is over-familiar; in others, skipping it entirely seems cold. When in doubt, mirror what your counterpart offers and match their depth.

The real secret, though, isn’t topic selection, it’s recovery. Small talk goes wrong for everyone eventually: a joke that doesn’t land, a question you can’t answer. A simple, honest line defuses it – “I’m afraid I don’t know that one, what do you think?” – and a quick pivot back to shared ground saves the moment.

Practise it like any other business skill and it quietly compounds. Clients remember the person who made the first two minutes easy, and that memory is worth more than any perfectly conjugated sentence.

– fin. Questions? Just ask.
