The Client Email You Misread Because You Missed One Cultural Cue

12 March 20264 min read

It started, as these things often do, with the word “interesting”. A British manager wrote to a German supplier: “That’s an interesting proposal.” He meant: I have doubts. She heard: He likes it. A fortnight of work followed, in the wrong direction.

Cultural cues live in the gaps between words. British understatement (“a bit of a problem” often means “a disaster”), German directness (“This is wrong” usually means exactly that, with no insult intended), Italian warmth (“my friend” can be a genuine term of endearment or pure formality). Miss the cue, and you misread the email entirely.

The fix isn’t a dictionary, it’s a habit. Before you reply, ask three questions: How direct is this culture by default? Is “yes” meaning “yes”, or “yes, I hear you”? Are there softeners here I should read past?

Do that consistently and something lovely happens: misunderstandings shrink, replies get faster, and clients start describing you as “easy to work with”. Which, in our experience, is the nicest thing a client can say.

– fin. Questions? Just ask.
